Sevens success for Thorp

MANY rugby players from Thorp Academy secured a local title without conceding a single point.

MANY OF Thorp Academy?s gifted rugby players secured a local title without conceding a single point.

The Under-15s team took part in a Sevens tournament at Darlington RFC against Egglescliffe, Belmont and Wolsingham schools and they turned on the style.

The team, captained by Alex Grange, started very aggressively and rarely gave Egglescliffe the chance to have the ball in the opener.

Quick-fire tries from Will Shipley, Harry Cuthbertson and Jake Boyle saw them take a clear lead that was never in doubt. All three players are Tier 3 students on the Academy?s Elite Performer Programme.

The fine form continued with excellent defensive displays from Ryan Jefferson, Jamie Minto and Kieran Roddam, while there was some ambitious attacking play from Kieron Francis and Harry Johnston.

Debutant Luke Hopper made an excellent start to his rugby life with some crunching tackles in another resounding win against the other teams and Jack Ward impressed too.

Thorp went on to lift the trophy and are already keen to defend their title.
